REGISTRATION

Q: After I've downloaded Locator/Koterra, how do I register the application?

A: When you register for the free 14-day trial via the 'Trial Registration' page, your wireless device is automatically registered on the Tierravision server.

You can also register Koterra/Locator directly 'Over-The-Air' (OTA) from your wireless device via the 'Start', 'Options' menu on the BlackBerry and via the 'Tools', 'Register' menu of your Palm or Windows Mobile device.

Note that this OTA registration utilizes SMS (Short Message Service), so at peak traffic periods there may be some delay in receiving 'Registration Confirmation' due to traffic delays in the wireless carrier's SMS network.

After you purchase Locator or Koterra, your wireless device is then automatically activated on the Tierravision server with a 1-year license.

BLUETOOTH GPS

Q: How do I set up my Bluetooth GPS receiver for use with Locator/Koterra for BlackBerry, PalmOS and Windows Mobile?

A: BlackBerry - Set up the Bluetooth device pairing via 'Options', 'Bluetooth' menu on the BlackBerry using the procedure described in the BT GPS device user manual.

Note that currently you must set the BT GPS receiver as the first BT device in the BlackBerry Bluetooth device stack, i.e. before the BT handsfree headset, BT tethered modem, etc. (This issue will be fixed in later revisions of Locator/Koterra).

Palm and Windows Mobile devices - Set up the Bluetooth using the regular BT setup procedure described in the user guide for the wireless device and BT GPS receiver.

Q: My BT GPS device cannot connect with Locator/Koterra, even though I have established a BT GPS pairing with it.

  1. For BlackBerry, check to see that the BT device is listed first in the BlackBerry BT device stack.
  2. Check that the BT device indicates that the BT connection has been established (e.g. rapid BT indicator flashing).
  3. Check that the BT GPS device has acquired GPS position lock with the GPS satellites (e.g. rapid GPS indicator flashing).

Q: Once BT pairing is completed on my BlackBerry, PalmOS or Windows Mobile handheld device, how do I enable BT GPS in Locator/Koterra and connect to the BT GPS receiver?

  • BlackBerry - When in Locator/Koterra, press the 'Enter' button to enable BT GPS on your wireless device. If BT is paired with the BlackBerry, then the GPS icon should appear in the top right hand corner of the screen and should be flashing red. Once GPS position has been acquired, then the red flashing GPS text should turn to a constant blue text.
  • Windows Mobile - When Locator/Koterra for Windows Mobile is initialized, it first looks for any GPS position data present on any of the COM ports of the WM device. If Locator/Koterra finds some GPS data, then it automatically engages automatic GPS map centering and GPS tracking, if enabled. You should then see the GPS 'blue target' icon displayed at the center of the screen and the 'Enable/Disable Automatic Map Centering' icon displayed on right of the taskbar.

If you do not see the blue GPS position icon on the map screen, then first check to see if the Bluetooth GPS device is paired with the WM device. You can tell if the BT GPS receiver is paired and communicating correctly by looking at the blue flashing LED on the BT GPS receiver. When first turned on, the blue LED on the BT GPS receiver flashes every 3 secs. Once pairing is complete, then the blue LED flashing increases to a rate of 1 per second.

If the BT device is correctly communicating with the GPS receiver, then check to see if GPS position has been acquired. If GPS position has been acquired, then the green LED on the USGlobalSat BT GPS receiver will flash every second. If no GPS position has been acquired, then the green LED stays on constantly and does not flash.

  • PalmOS - First pair the BT GPS with the PalmOS device. Then start Locator/Koterra and go to "Options" "GPS Preferences" and press on the "Select GPS Device" button. Then select the desired BT GPS device and enable automatic map centering and the GPS tracking features as required. Then the GPS BT receiver should then automatically connect with Locator/Koterra.

ADDRESS BOOK MAPPING

Q: How do I map out my list of addresses to display in Locator/Koterra?

A: Take your XML list of addresses and import it into the Tierravision address geocoding web service. Then copy and save the resulting file to a file with the name format x-rimdevice-filename-Koterrax.xml, e.g. x-rimdevice-filename-Koterrax.xml which is the format that the BlackBerry supports. The XML file can then be sent to the desired phone as an email attachment and simply imported into Locator/Koterra.

LOCATION MESSAGES

Q: How do I send a Location Message to another Locator/Koterra user?

A: Select the desired location icon to send from the map screen and then select the "Send via SMS" option. You can then type in a text dispatch message and the recipient's mobile phone number. Then select OK and the location message is sent. On the recipient's phone the SMS message is received and the location message can be accessed via the "Location Messages" menu item.
